February
2008
Time is moving
quickly, and its difficult to believe the second semester
is here. I hope everyone had a restful winter break and is experiencing
a good 2008 so far.
We are half way through the school year, and the second half will
move much more rapidly than the first. Please be sure to log into
the school website, and check our weekly calendars for the various
events taking place during the second semester.
Let me take this opportunity to fill you in on whats been
happening here at Serra High School. The band, once again, was asked
to participate in the Main Street Disneyland Parade February 1st.
We are so very proud of our students and the band director, Mr.
Steve Rea. They all do such an excellent job and represent Serra
High School so well.
In mid December, prior to winter break, Serra had its annual winter
concert. Of course, the band performed exemplary as always. You
may have heard that Serra now has an orchestra program to offer
our students. Mr. Boughner, who is new to Serra, is the director
of the orchestra and has done a tremendous job with the students.
The orchestra performed as well at the winter concert with the beautiful
sounds of string instruments filling the air. In addition to orchestra,
Mr. Boughner is the director of Serras Singers. The Chorus
put on a marvelous performance filling the theater with beautiful
a cappella music. Mr. Boughner is very excited about the Chorus
and Orchestra programs and is looking forward to building both programs
and hopefully make them as strong as Serras award winning
band program.
Testing is directly upon us. Seniors will be taking the CAHSEE test
February 5th and 6th. In order to participate in graduation ceremonies,
seniors are required to pass both the English Language Arts and
Mathematics portions of this test. Sophomores and juniors will be
taking the CAHSEE exam March 11th and 12th. Parents, please make
sure your students prepare adequately, get a good nights sleep
and have breakfast for these two days.
Winter Ball is scheduled for February 23rd at the Four Points Sheraton
on Aero Drive. Students must purchase their tickets at the finance
office window prior to the dance. Students must have a 2.0 GPA in
academics, as well as citizenship and cannot be on the Loss Of Privilege
(LOP) list in order to be eligible to attend.
Congratulations to the drama department on their excellent production
of The Odd Couple. It was well attended and enjoyed by all. Their
next big production will be the musical, Youre a Good
Man Charlie Brown.. Ms. Howell, Mrs. Hall and Mr. Boughner
are working diligently with the students and several other staff
members to make this a huge success.
The Annual Serra Foundation Auction is scheduled for Saturday March
8th. The theme for this years festivity is Mardi Gras. There
will be food, fun and of course the auction. All proceeds go to
SHS. For more information, visit the school website and click on
the Serra Foundation link. We look forward to having you join us.
As mentioned above, the second semester will come fast and furious.
Standardized testing is only a couple of months away. Please talk
to your children about the importance of these tests, and encourage
them to put forth their very best efforts.
If you have any concerns or questions regarding your childs
progress or anything else, please feel free to contact us.
